Book Review: The Shack by William P. Young

729230: The Shack The Shack

By William P. Young / Windblown Media

Mackenzie Allen Philips’ youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his “Great Sadness,” Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant “The Shack” wrestles with the timeless question, “Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You’ll want everyone you know to read this book!

Kelly’s Review:

I purchased this book over the weekend after reading a recommendation for it in a friend’s online journal. I actually didn’t set out to get it, but we were at Lifeway and when I saw it I remembered her recommendation, so we bought it. I’m so glad we did!! This book tells an amazing story and the messages contained within it are truly powerful.

I am mixed on how to properly review The Shack because at different points in the book, I had different reactions to it. There were times when I was saddened by the events of the story. There were times when I was moved. There were times when, honestly, I was confused. There were even times when I felt it was going way out in an weird direction. But, it kept pulling me in and pulling me back to reading. The story and the messages are powerful. Even through sadness, confusion, oddity and even elation, I just felt like I was supposed to be reading the book. I felt that I needed to take in the overall message and not get lost in the subtleties elsewhere. And, I did. I had to force myself to put it down at times and take a break from reading. I had to make myself slow down and embrace the message. And, yes, sometimes I had to make myself pick it back up again. It was worth it all. I came through this book with such an uplifted spirit.  I’m so glad I read it and I can recommend it without any reservation whatsoever. This book didn’t change my life, but it touched my heart and gave me some beautiful insights that I appreciate so much. That is what I would like to see shared with others.

I may have more to share on this later. But, for now these are the words that have come to me and I hope they are adequate to express how much I enjoyed this book. It blessed my heart and I have no reservation in recommending it to others.

Kelly’s Review:

The Book of Jane is a modern-day take on the Biblical story of Job. Jane Williams, a New Yorker who seems to “have it all”, is the central character. Jane has a job she loves, a boyfriend she adores, a great apartment and more. Everything in her world is just perfect and she is thankful for all the blessings in her life.  The tables start to turn and Jane is met with one disaster in her life after another. Whatever can go wrong for her does.  Jane knows that she has to continue to rely on God and believe in His graciousness, even in the darkest of times. But, will she?!

I don’t mean to leave a cliffhanger in the book description above, but I just don’t want to give away anything in the plot.  The way Jane’s trials and reactions are written in this book are very believable.  Jane’s trials have a domino effect – first one, then another, then ANOTHER and so forth. Her reaction to those trials is not oversimplified which I appreciated. The book is written in a way that illustrates that Christians suffer too. Too often I think that some novels are guilty of “cleaning up” Christianity and making it seem as though all it takes is a prayer heavenward to set things straight. That’s simply not the case as we all know. I found it encouraging to read a novel in which the character had so many trials and faced them with God’s guidance, but also with her own human emotions showing.

This was a great read. It was what some would call “chick lit”, I’m sure, but definitely chick lit of great quality.  The read, for me, was enjoyable and inspirational. I will be sure to read more books by these authors in the future.

Wake Up, Sleepy Blog…

We were away over the weekend, so I didn’t get to post. So, I’m here now waking up my sleepy blog. :p

I hope it was a great weekend all around. We were in South Georgia over the weekend. It was a really nice family weekend. We got lots of Nana time in which is always nice. Mickey and I even got to have a dinner date on Saturday which was great for us. The weather was incredible all weekend too and we just had a really great family weekend.

The reason we went down for the weekend was for our nephew Jackson’s baptism which was on Sunday. Jackson did great for the whole ceremony. He fell asleep in his mommy’s arms (is there anything more peaceful than a sleeping baby?!) and stayed asleep through most everything. He almost woke up when Liz leaned his head down to get his water and oil, but he went right back out. We had the honor and privilege of being included in the ceremony as Jackson’s Godparents and we take that vow very seriously and right to heart. We love that little boy so much and we feel so blessed that he has come into our family.

I will post more later. I need to catch up with a book review and deals. I’m also reading an incredibly powerful book that I can’t wait to post more about. It’s called The Shack and as soon as I’m done reading it, I’m going to post more.

Happy Monday!

Teacher Appreciation

Today I had the privilege of working in Macey’s preschool classroom alongside another mom. We were there for an hour and a half to relieve the teachers so that they could go to the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon today. There were 14 kids present today (2 were absent) and they were so well behaved. They were so adorable and we had a ball being there with them. The time flew by so quickly and before we knew it, the teachers were back from their luncheon. I just loved being there with the class today and what made it even more special was that Macey was thrilled to have me there. It was a GREAT morning!!

I am a room mom for Mariana’s class, so I prepared a dessert for the luncheon. I made a Chocolate Lovers Favorite Cake and it turned out beautifully. I filled the center of the bundt cake with raspberries and lined the outer edge with strawberries. I put chocolate sauce over the cake and berries and dusted with powdered sugar. I hope it tasted as good as it looked. Here is a photo of the cake this morning before we took it in:

Seriously, doesn’t that look good?! I must ‘fess up and say that I didn’t even label the cake dish because I didn’t want the leftovers to come home and tempt me. Someone else can have the cake and all it’s chocolatey-fruity goodness. YUM!

We really are thankful to be a part of such an amazing Christian preschool. Macey has been attending since she was two and she has loved it from day one. We have had the best teachers all along and every year has been a blessing. This year Macey’s teachers are “Miss” Libbie and “Miss” Rosemary and she just adores them both, as do we. Mariana attends one morning per week and her wonderful teachers are “Miss” Jennifer and “Miss” Angela. We have had the best year and have really felt tremendously blessed to have all four teachers for our girls.

Happy Earth Day!

So, today is Earth Day 2008. A day to take some extra time to be grateful for our beautiful planet and to put ourselves into action to preserve it for future generations. When I told Macey “Happy Earth Day” this morning, she reminded me that EVERY day should be Earth Day. I agree, Macey. I agree. God has entrusted this wonderful Earth to us and we should all do our part to take better care of it. We should be better stewards of this gracious gift God has given. And, believe me, I’m not pointing any fingers outward either. I’m pointing them all at myself and starting here at home. There are things we can all do to make sure our world is cleaner and healthier all around. We can recycle, we can use energy wisely and efficiently and we can reduce waste. Those are just starters. There is much more we can all do! To learn more, click here and let’s all do our part to insure a beautiful tomorrow!
