Georgia’s Gas Shortage…

This gas shortage we’re dealing with here in Georgia is nothing short of frustrating. For the last few weeks gasoline has been harder and harder to come by, especially around Metro Atlanta. No one seems to really know when this crunch will end either. Some estimates say it’ll be at least two more weeks, but only time will tell.

As maddening as this is, it’s a reminder to me of just how much we all take our resources for granted. I am pointing the finger at myself here as much as anyone. But, really, isn’t it true that we tend to assume that the things we want and need will just always be there? In this age of technology, we might be incredibly advanced in gadgetry, but we have certainly become spoiled in many ways. We are used to being able to hop in our vehicles for whatever jaunt we decide we want to take at any given moment. If it’s a one block trip to a convenience store, we go. If it’s a 20 mile drive to a mall, we go. Whatever the case, we go. But, now we have to stop and think about those trips. We have to decide if it’s actually worth it to use that gas. We have to determine if it’s really worth waiting in the long gas lines just so that we can go some place. And, honestly, I think this is a good thing. Don’t get me wrong, the gas shortage bugs me as much as it does anyone else. I am just seeing that it’s having a positive effect on me, personally, in that it’s making me realize how much I have taken for granted before this all happened. Now that I am getting into the habit of planning and consolidating trips, I find that it’s a more valuable use of my time in addition to saving resources. That part of the shortage is a blessing. The other 95% of the shortage? Well, I won’t lie, that’s a pain. But, hopefully it will be short-lived.

I found these tips to economize gas mileage on GPW Resources and wanted to share them here.

How to Drive Economically

1. Slow down when possible – driving 55 mph can save up to 10% on gas mileage vs. driving 65 – 70 mph. This is due to wind resistance.

2. If your car has an overdrive gear, use it. Traveling at fast rates in low gears can consume up to 45% more fuel than is needed.

3. Manual shift driven cars allow you to change to highest gear as soon as possible, thereby letting you save gas if you “nurse it along”. However, if you cause the engine to “bog down”, premature wearing of engine parts occurs.

4. Keep windows closed when traveling at highway speeds. Open windows cause air drag, reducing your mileage by 10%.

5. Drive steadily. Slowing down or speeding up wastes fuel. Also avoid tailgating – the driver in front of you is unpredictable. Not only is it unsafe, but if affects your economy, if he slows down unexpectedly.

6. Think ahead when approaching hills. If you accelerate, do it before you reach the hill, not while you’re on it.

7. Think ahead at stop signs and stop lights – no need to race up to a red light and then jam on the brakes to slow down. Plan to slow down before the light. If you can slow down soon enough to not have to stop at the light, you can save quite a bit a fuel versus starting from a standing start.

8. Stoplights are usually timed for your motoring advantage. By traveling steadily at the legal speed limit you boost your chances of having the “green light” all the way.

9. Regular tune-ups ensure best economy; check owner’s manual for recommended maintenance intervals. Special attention should be given to maintaining clean air filters… diminished air flow increases gas waste.

10. Remove snow tires during good weather seasons; traveling on deep tire tread really robs fuel!

11. Inflate all tires to maximum limit. For each pound of pressure the tire is under inflated, you consume about 1% more fuel. Make sure you carry in your car an accurate tire gauge and know what the pressure should be. Check your tires at least twice a month and always before, during and after long trips.

12. Remove excess weight from trunk or inside of car – extra tires, back seats, unnecessary heavy parts. Extra weight reduces mileage, especially when driving up inclines.

13. During cold weather watch for icicles frozen to car frame. Up to 100 lbs. can be quickly accumulated! Accumulated snow and ice cause tremendous wind resistance. Try and keep your car clean at the carwash when possible..

14. Avoid using roof top carriers – they can cause serious drag on the car and lessen your mileage by up to 15%. Pack it in or leave in behind.

Gotta love the library…

Today I renewed my library card. It’s been over two years since I have used it. Why on earth have I let it go so long?! Hmmm. I just don’t know. Honestly, I have no idea. I am a person who loves books and absolutely loves reading. There is no excuse for not going to the library. I’ve been reading all this time, but I have been buying books and/or borrowing from friends. Well, with the tight economic times, I figured I needed a better solution. And, what better solution than the library?! All the books I could ever read and they’re free. So cool!! Of course I’ll still purchase books now and then, but I’m really happy to be a renewed member of the library again. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to join your local public library. Let your kids join too. :) Libraries rock!

Dusting off the cobwebs…

Okay, I’m going to try again to revive my blog. I really do enjoy blogging, but since school started for the girls, I feel like I’m always on the go. Also, two members of our family had surgery in the month of September, so it’s been a crazy time around our home. Macey is full recouperated from her surgery and has been released from her surgeon’s care.  Praise God that it all went so smoothly and that she has healed so well! Mickey had surgery on his legs this past Wednesday for compartment syndrome and he has been a real rock star patient. He is doing incredibly well. Again, praises to God!! So, our family has had quite a lot going on, but maybe I can find time to get back into blogging because I miss it. :)

Quick Post-Op Report…

  • Macey’s surgery was yesterday.
  • The abridged version of the story is that the surgeon was pleased with everything. He confirmed that the cyst was a benign Thyroglossal Cyst and he was able to remove all of it in addition to a piece of bone where it was attached.
  • Macey did extremely well through the surgery and her recovery is going great as well.
  • She still has some swelling in her neck and face, but that is going down nicely. Her energy level is great, her appetite is almost normal again and she is really doing extremely well.
  • PRAISE GOD!!!
  • Thanks to those who posted and who supported us with prayer. Continued prayers are appreciated as Macey heals and recuperates fully.

A Quick Update…

It’s been awhile since I have posted. I hate to be so far behind on my blog. I have book reviews and other posts just waiting for me. But, I have been SO busy with life in general. I’m on the Parents Council for preschool this year and that has been busy, but fun. Macey has her after school activities and we have church activities, etc. But, I am hoping that once we settle into routine now that both schools (elementary and preschool) are in session I can find my blog groove again. I miss it.

Macey’s surgery is tomorrow, September 5th, at 10:25AM (EST).

The surgery will be done atat a local childrens hospital where I used to work several years ago. Macey got to visit there yesterday. She saw a Child Life Specialist (CLS), who talked her through things and gave us a tour of day surgery. Macey was extremely shy around the CLS, but was absolutely taken by the toy/game room they had there. She barely talked to the CLS, but she talked about her new friend to me all evening and even made  a poster to take in for the CLS on Friday. The hospital has been renovated and new buildings have been built since I worked there years ago. It is SO nice!! I took Macey to the gift shop after we met with the CLS and let’s just say that the gift shop was a HUGE hit!! While she is in surgery tomorrow, we plan to go down and get balloons to have for her when she wakes up.

Besides the time, here is what we know about tomorrow:

  • The surgeon has already told us the surgery will last about an hour.
  • Child Life Specialist (CLS) told me yesterday that Macey will get the “loopy juice” (a pre-sedative drink with the drug Versed) and will go back for anesthesia without us. She will go to a recovery room post-op,but will be brought to us in a room as soon as she wakes up. She said that most kids have no memory of being in recovery.
  • We’ll be in a room with Macey for at least two hours post-op to make sure she wakes up well, gets rehydrated, etc. Pending any complications, we’ll be home in the afternoon. If any complications are present (unlikely per the surgeon), she’ll be admitted for observation.

So, that’s what’ going on here, at least the biggie. Prayers for our family and especially our sweet Macey are much appreciated. Mickey and I have a real peace about all of this and we trust that God has this all in His hands. The butterflies in our stomaches are fluttering, but we have every faith that Macey will come through this with flying colors.
